Malthe- Singapore

My name is Malthe Ørberg, and I am studying Software Engineering. I spent my 6th semester of my bachelor's degree in Singapore. I have always been drawn to Asia, so Singapore was the perfect destination for me as it embodies a great diversity of Asian influences. As an exchange semester can be expensive, I had to seek scholarships to fulfill my dreams. In that regard, it was natural for me to ask my girlfriend, Maria, for help, as she has often assisted people with various application processes.

Needed help for the application

I readily admit that it felt overwhelming to sift through all the scholarships and try to determine if they truly matched my profile. It was like finding a needle in a haystack. Moreover, I struggled to assess what was truly important to include in a compelling application and found it challenging to figure out how to highlight my strengths while being honest about my limitations. This is where Maria came to the rescue.

Maria was really helpful in finding the right balance between presenting myself in a convincing way while still staying true to my humility. Her input and guidance were invaluable because she knew me so well and knew how I could best showcase my skills without sounding boastful or arrogant.

Almost fully funded

When I set off for Singapore at the end of 2021, I still had concerns about my finances as I had not received sufficient funding at that time. However, throughout the spring, I continuously received scholarships, which ultimately allowed me to complete the exchange with almost full financial coverage despite Singapore being an expensive destination. I don't think this would have been possible without Maria's help.

My exchange adventure

Singapore was an incredibly eventful experience for me, as it was my first time outside the borders of Europe. I had the pleasure of studying Chinese, and it was truly fun to delve into a new language and culture that differed so significantly from engineering. I have learned an incredible amount during my time there. I have had the opportunity to experience a variety of sights and events that have enriched my understanding of the world. This journey has not only broadened my horizons but has also contributed to significant personal growth, where I have grown and improved in many ways.

A new worlds

Stepping off the plane in Singapore felt like landing in a new world. The bustling Asian markets, the charming food stalls, and the lush nature exceeded all my expectations. It was almost surreal to wander through the different neighborhoods and witness the fusion of centuries-old traditions.

A new university culture

The study culture in Asia is different and known for its dedication, hard work, and high expectations for performance. There is a focus on discipline, precision, and rote memorization of academic content. It was a significant change from the conditions I was accustomed to studying under in Denmark. Therefore, it took some time to adapt academically.

A new lust for adventures

During my exchange, I had the opportunity to travel. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, most of my travels were within Singapore, but towards the end of my exchange, the border to Malaysia opened up. I highly recommend other students to take advantage of the opportunities to travel more during their exchange.
